Freedom Y

Yes, to Freedom in all it’s guises – freedom from, to, with, against, for, in, out, below, above, freedoms lost and freedoms gained –

Mr. Nelson Mandela: “I have walked that long road to freedom. I have tried not to falter; I have made missteps along the way. But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can only rest for a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not ended”.

Jean-Paul Sartre: “Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does”.

Thich Nhat Hanh: “Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If, in our heart, we still cling to anything – anger, anxiety, or possessions – we cannot be free”.

  1. Fabulous quotes, Susan. I always feel uplifted when reading the words of Nelson Mandela. Thank you for sharing.

  2. Yes, yes, yes, and also, “I’m free, to do what I want, any old time.” I forget whose song that is, but it’s catchy. xo

  3. Yes! Yes to all of these…
Well compiled quotes. Nelson Mandela was right when he said – with freedom comes great responsibility. That is something we forget when we claim our freedom.
Your cell phone pics are great – the last one esp stand out – dried fallen leaves in different hues.

    • Thanks Kislaya … yes to accepting responsibility also. I’ll pop around to your latest post a little later. Yoga is especially interesting to me …

  4. As usual your quotes are uplifting and inspiring. I’m deeply moved by your photos of elephants living without shackles and cages. I’m also deeply moved (as always) by Nelson Mandela: “I dare not linger, for my long walk is not ended.” Thank you, Susan.

    • Thanks Elaine – the photo of elephants was taken a few weeks ago at the Plettenberg Bay Safari Nature Reserve. While there, I too was struck by the freedom of the animals, living in harmony with everything. I agree, Mandela’s words are always inspiring, and this last sentence of that particular quote really gets to the guts of it ..

  5. Yes to all of this Susan. I particularly hold the words attributed to Buddha close in my heart as guidance for this journey. But I also think remembering to say yes to things is equally important to railing against all the things that need our attention, and need our courageous action. We must remember to walk towards our freedom as much as we push back against the oppressors.

  6. I love Buddah’s quote knowing that we are free of other’s opinions. Hey, and after tomorrow, you will be FREE too!! Great job, Susan! <3

  7. Yes! I’m loving your “Freedom” quotes today Susan and find myself powerfully drawn to Nelson Mandela’s wise words, “But I can only rest for a moment …” Oh the beauty and invitation I sense within these poetic lines makes me want to cry as I am reminded not to turn away too quickly … but to stand still and absorb the view in front of me. I’m reminded how after climbing a mountain, we survey the landscape from the summit and how even the most “fleeting” of views can stay with us for the rest of our lives. And rest, I agree rest is but for a passing moment before we wake and pull ourselves up for a new day. Much to reflect on here, loving the photo’s too. Love and light, Deborah.

    • Thanks Deborah – I remember seeing the curve of the planet when on top of Kilimanjaro – it was a moment that will always stay with me. There are always hills and mountains to climb, and to come down again, sometimes harder than the ascent ..
Love & Light to you too, Susan
